My friend Paloma is one of those wonderful cases that have no scientific explanation and that proves that the possibility of getting pregnant always exists. After years of hormonal treatments and several unsuccessful IVF attempts, when she was almost ready to throw in the towel, she finally became pregnant. He had a beautiful girl who filled his heart with happiness, brought joy to the couple and made the family grow.

Up to here, everything normal. The incredible thing was that after quarantine, she had her first period after delivery and then disappeared. What at first appeared to be a derangement was actually a pregnancy, her second pregnancy and naturally! The possibility of getting pregnant always exists. It was incredible both for her and her partner and for the medical team that cared for her for so many years!

And it is that although spontaneous pregnancies are known by specialists in assisted reproduction, this case is special because of the proximity between the new pregnancy and childbirth. A small French study precisely, published in the magazine Fertility and Sterility, that having a child naturally after assisted reproductive treatments is not so rare.

Twenty-four percent of couples who underwent unsuccessful assisted reproductive treatment have managed to have children between seven and nine years after science failed to solve their infertility problems. They have not been the only ones who had children without trying. Also 17 percent of couples, who had already achieved offspring through assisted reproduction treatments, achieved a new pregnancy when they thought that diapers were a thing of the past.

The research authors evaluated 2,134 couples who had undergone in vitro fertilization (IVF) in eight French reproductive centers, some successfully and others belonging to the group of patients who cannot conceive despite advances in assisted reproductive techniques (around 50 percent ). Between seven and nine years after their visit to the medical centers, they were sent a questionnaire that, among other things, asked them if they had spontaneously become parents in that period of time.

Various fertility studies have shown that almost one in four supposedly infertile couples is not infertile, since very few infertile couples have absolute infertility (that is, 0.00 percent chance of pregnancy). Most of the couples who consult are subfertile, that is, they have a clearly lower than normal chance of pregnancy. Another interesting fact to highlight is the cotreatments associated with assisted reproduction that can have a long-term effect, such as some therapies for endometriosis or certain surgeries. Therefore, a positive conclusion must be drawn from the findings of these researchers: that even if fertility treatments have failed, the possibility of pregnancy always exists.
